Segmentation
Guest segments that keep themselves up to date
Build a segment once on visits, spend, tags, survey answers or source, and it stays current within about a minute of a guest acting. One audience then serves every campaign, journey, offer and ad.
What can I segment guests on?
Fields, tags, visits, lifetime spend, survey answers and source. Source covers WiFi, import, form, API and connector, so you can target guests by how they first reached you. Conditions combine with AND, with one OR group, and a segment can be inverted or built on other segments.
- Fields, tags and your own custom fields
- Visits and lifetime spend
- Survey answers and NPS band
- Source: WiFi, import, form, API or connector
- AND rules with one OR group, and segments built on other segments

Can I segment on what guests did, not only who they are?
Yes. Behavioural conditions count what a guest actually did, such as an email click, a visit or an offer redeemed, so "visited at least twice in 30 days" or "has never redeemed an offer" is one rule. Machine opens and link scanners never count.
- Did something at least, at most or exactly a set number of times
- Over a rolling window of 1 to 3,650 days or fixed dates, optionally at chosen venues
- Has never done something
- Engagement rating, such as at least 4 stars
Do segments update on their own?
Yes. Membership is re-checked within about a minute of a guest acting, with a nightly rebuild as the fallback, so there is no list to re-run. Joining or leaving a segment, or gaining a tag, can start a journey, so a regular who drops out of your weekly segment can get a win-back message.
- Membership refreshed within about a minute of a guest acting
- Joining or leaving a segment, or gaining a tag, can start a journey
Can I filter on dates and numbers?
Yes. Date and number comparisons work, so "not visited in 30 days" or "lifetime spend above a set amount" is a single rule. Combine them with visit counts and venues to find the regulars who have gone quiet at one site.
- Date comparisons, such as not visited in 30 days
- Number comparisons, such as lifetime spend above an amount
How do surveys feed segments?
Survey answers are written to the guest record, so any answer can be a segment rule, and every NPS answer marks the guest as a promoter, passive or detractor. You can also save everyone who answered a given way as a segment. Surveys offer 16 question types and 24 starter surveys, sent by a button in an email, a link, a QR code or a kiosk.

Questions
Can I see how many of a segment I can actually email or text?
Yes. Each segment card shows its total members, how many can be emailed and how many can be texted, with consent and suppression applied.
Can I use a segment outside Engage?
Yes. A segment can load into Mailchimp as an audience, be read through the public API and, with Engage Ads (a pilot Purple sets up with you), become a Facebook and Instagram audience of the guests whose consent allows ads. Signed webhooks can also send segment events to your own systems.
